ABSTRACT:

Although the Advanced Composite Materials ACM are currently used in the field of civil

engineering, their applications are still very limited and specific for different reasons.

Definitely, the
ACM have superior macro-structural characteristics, but they may not the

dominant factor that governs the structural behavior of a composite material such as concrete.

Major differences are expected between the behavior of the
ACM as an independent and the

behavior of a matrix composed of concrete and ACM. Not only that, the long term

performance of the
ACM is still questionable and needs extensive research work to be

verified. As a result, the objectives of this paper are to conduct analytical and experimental

study to seek the stresses induced in concrete cubes taken as reference as well as another ones

wrapped with GFRP exposed to constant and cyclic temperatures as well. In the analytical

study, a finite element analysis was conducted where the reference and the wrapped

specimens are modeled and analyzed under static loads and temperature. The results of the

finite element analysis are taken to guide the experimental program where the specimens are

exposed to both constant and cyclic temperatures up to 180 ºC. The results showed the

stability of the composite behavior within the studied limit of temperatures. Also, exposing

the specimens to cyclic temperature leaded to decrease the mechanical properties when

compared to the case of the constant temperature.
