Abstract.
In the present paper the rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry (CWS) were
investigated. The studied factors included the effect of particle size and solid concentrations.
The power-law model was applied to determine the non-Newtonian properties using a
Chandler Engineering viscometer Model 3500LS+ (rotational viscometer) at shear rates from
0.1 to 600 S-1. The results showed that the slurry exhibited shear thinning, i.e. pseudoplasticbehaviour in the range of 0.1-600 S-1 shear rate. The degree of pseudoplasticity increased withthe decrease in mean particle size and with the increase of coal content. At low solid
concentrations the slurry may be considered as a Newtonian fluid.
