Abstract

Polymer modifiers are being considered to improve the performance of asphaltic mixtures.

Laboratory performance evaluation of Polyethylene (PE) modified asphaltic mixtures was

based on physical and mechanical properties. Physical properties were evaluated in terms of

penetration and softening point. Mechanical properties were evaluated based on the indirect

tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength. Asphalt binder content of 5 percent by

total mass of the mixture was used based on Marshall stability mix design method.

Polyethylene content of 3% by weight of binder was used. Experimental testing has revealed

the enhancement in both physical and mechanical performance when Polyethylene was added.

Life cycle cost analysis need to be performed before widely adapting Polyethylene in asphalt

paving
