ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of increasing rotational speed

on the weld joint strength of an equal diameters of AISI 304l alloy steel. . Friction welding

was conducted using three rotational speeds; 800,1000 and 1200. Friction pressure, forging

pressure, friction time and forging time are kept constant. The integrity of the joints has been

investigated by visual and electron microscopy. The mechanical properties assessment

included hardness and tensile tests were carried out to weld joints.

The experimental results showed that the thickness of full plastic deformed zone (FPDZ) was

increased as rotational speed is increased. It was also observed that the width of the FPDZ has

an important effect on the tensile strength of friction welding samples; the tensile strength

increases with increase of the rotational speed. The simulation of temperature and using finite

element was also presented and discussed.
